I am planning to travel from Helsinki, Finland to Tallinn, Estonia & then to Saint Petersburg, Russia. However, from what I can find online trains and ferries no longer operate from Tallin to Saint Petersburg.
Would it actually be easier to travel to Tallinn first and then go to Saint Petersburg from Helsinki?
There's a night train from Tallinn to St. P.
departing at 22:24, arr. at 7:26 next a.m.
Return from St.Petersburg Vitebskii at 21:50, arr. Tallinn at 6:28.next a.m.
From Helsinki to St. Pete. there are 3 trains a day.

Maybe in the summer they will have ferries again, but for now the Tallink-Silja lines don't show any trips.
You can also go by bus from Tallinn to St. P. but it will be no faster than the train and less comfortable. they do have day trips, though so you can see the countryside:
