The Russian martial art of Sambo was developed in the first several decades of the 20th century, in the wake of the Bolshevik Revolution and the fall of the Tsarist regime. A training program for martial arts in the Bolshevik Red Army has produced a new system of combat hand to hand in part of Traditional Wrestling in Russia and other regional styles to native or adopted and influenced by various foreign martial arts, including Judo and Jujitsu, as well as the traditional Olympic sports of boxing and Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.The new system was called Sambo (also spelled Sambo or Sombo), which is an acronym of Russian words Samozaschita Orujiya Bez, or self-defense without weapons. From the beginning, Sambo was a system in constant evolution, adapting to meet the needs of its fighters, soldiers on the battlefields of World War II fighters of crime in the streets of Moscow. Today, Sambo is practiced in three distinct ways: as a competitive sport, as a self-defense and as a lethal combat system used by police and military forces.Sometimes incorrectly, that the Russian Judo, Sambo was acknowledged as an official sport in 1938. It was included in the Moscow Olympics in 1980 as a demonstration sport, though it failed to win the popularity necessary to become a sporting event.
