Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky Cantata suspense - Based on the classic film music
You may have seen the film Alexander Nevsky classic by the great Russian director Sergei Eisenstein, based on historical events in 13th century Russia.Sergei Prokofiev composed the music for the film 1938, and soon after made a cantata for concert of film music that has delighted audiences since with its grandeur and sweep.
I listened to the recording terribly exciting on the Philips label with the choir and orchestra of St. Petersburg theater of Mariinsky directed by Valery Gergiev, you should not miss.
The film tells the heroic struggle of the Russian army, led by the Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky defeat the German army invasion of the Teutonic Order of Livonia. Previously, Russia had defeated the Swedish army of invasion and had to deal with the conquest of the Mongol hordes.
The cantata opens with a brief introduction and dark entitled "Russia under the Mongol yoke." Then the chorus sings of the recent invasion of the Swedish army in the song "Alexander Nevsky".
