When a Century of Soviet Art Meets Ceramics | Arts & Ideas | The ...

Bolshevik leaders after the revolution has urged local artists to produce high quality and powerful propaganda. Many of the greatest avant-garde artists of the day captured the spirit of the young state brandishing slogans in revolutionary poetry, drama, painting and film.

Porcelain was no exception. Plants as Leningrad State Porcelain Factory, formerly the Imperial Porcelain Factory, turned away from the production of china for the aristocrats of its production for the new Soviet regime.The 1920s have seen phrases such as "He who does not work do not eat" and "The Kingdom of workers and peasants will never end" engraved on the rim of the dinner plates by masters of the art ceramics.

These two plates are among the porcelain dishes and nearly 500 sculptures on display in a new permanent exhibition, "Masterpieces of Soviet porcelain, the Museum of the All-Russian Decorative and Applied Arts Popular. The exhibition presents rare masterpieces designed in porcelain factories of Moscow and Leningrad from 1920 to 1990.

"Twentieth-century Russian porcelain is a striking single page in the history of applied arts, not only in Russia but throughout the world. This porcelain never existed and probably never again," Larisa Karagodina, head of the department of Contemporary Art Museum of Ceramics of State succession Kuskovo, told the opening of the exhibition last month.

"The porcelain reflects all the important events of the century and all the various and contradictory tendencies of his art," she added.

Many parts of the exhibition could be worth tens of thousands of dollars, "said Yelena Vorushilina, curator of the exhibition. Most of them are editions of the author, which means that only a handful of copies were produced and each was signed by the artist.
