This auction is for a clock TC18, specifically directed by Jason von Nied. The TC18 has started as a random picture seen on the Internet over several months has taken shape in the beautiful room to work you see here. For the history of this piece, including videos and photos please see the homepage at http://www.vonnieda.org/tc18 and the story of how he came to be http://www.vonnieda.org/archives/ 1406
The TC18 for auction is one of six clocks TC18 total that have been made. This is the only one that will be sold. The others were given as gifts to close friends and family and, of course, is mine.
The clock TC18 is based on a vintage Russian IV tube display vacuum fluorescent-18. These tubes were not made for 20 years or older and that this clock is "new old" stock, which means it has been in storage since these tubes were in production. Before being installed in this clock, it has never been used.
The TC18 is around 7.50 cm wide by 2.25 inches high by 2.00 inches deep. He made a great reception or mantle clock and the display is clear and easy to read an entire room.
The electronic clock is entirely designed by me and are "Open Source". You can download the pattern and model of the map from my website if you're interested in hacking the clock. The clock is running custom firmware, also written by me and the firmware is also Open Source. You can download, edit and upload the clock to change any aspect of its operation. The core of the electronics is a ATmega328P running an Arduino bootloader compatible. The clock is set and controlled by a rotary type switch on the back.It has a full menu that allows you to set the date, time, display mode, brightness and overall brightness of individual digits of the screen.
The enclosure of the TC18 is aluminum sheet and tube. The metal parts have been cut on my little 3-axis CNC mill. The pieces have been shaped tube mostly by hand and hand were polished to a glossy, almost mirror finish. The net pieces / ends on the TC18 and end plates sheet was dyed black anodized and has a very deep, matte finish. Other elements of the enclosure are steel bolts, O-rings and plastic spacers.
