Shuttle and Station Crews Busy with Transfers and Spacewalk Preps ...

(NASA) - The crew of Discovery has lifted the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module from the payload bay, he coupled to the Harmony module of the ISS, and is ready to begin the unpacking of 21-feet long, moving 15 feet wide van.

Leonardo is the delivery of 8 tons of cargo, including four experiment racks and crew quarters last to be delivered to the station. This is Leonardo's final return to the station. When he returned on STS-133 will remain as a [r more ...]

The shuttle Endeavour launched into orbit last week, soaring to its mission to last from the International Space Station. As he approached, the astronauts aboard the station nearly complete now took this spectacular photo of the Orbiter:

Superb. And while I am a scientist and a Rover ... found this 21 hours ago on blogs.discovermagazine.com

coondoggie writes "Space Shuttle Discovery from NASA in orbit exploded this morning and, despite some communication problems, is scheduled to dock to the International Space Station in the wee hours of Wednesday, April 7.After this mission NASA has only three shuttle scheduled to launch, although speculation persists that the program may be extended.

Hugh Pickens writes "NPR reports that former shuttle commander Chris Ferguson now moonlights as a drummer Max Q, a classic rock band composed entirely of astronauts." Maybe we'll have more time to practice here once the shuttle program is a slow end, "Ferguson said, raising the question - what does the future hold for the astronaut corps by NASA after the agency elite mothballs its aging space shuttles in the coming months?NASA currently has about 80 active astronauts and astronaut candidates hired nine last year.

What happened to the space station Mir, and why and when did it happen?

What happened to the space station Mir, and why and when did it happen?

Mir (Мир, which can mean both world and peace in Russian) was a Soviet (and later Russian) orbital station. It was humanity's first consistently inhabited long-term research station in space. Mir currently holds the record for longest continuous human presence in space at eight days short of 10 years. Through a number of collaborations, it was made internationally accessible to cosmonauts and astronauts of many different countries. Mir was assembled in orbit by successively connecting several modules, each launched separately from February 19, 1986 to 1996. The station existed until March 23, 2001, at which point it was deliberately de-orbited, and broke apart during atmospheric re-entry.
