Wasn't Palin referring to a Russian "presence", not the view?

I think AKMNdude explained it well. Here it is:
http://www.plnewsforum.com/index.php/for ums/viewthread/40062/

"People belittle Palin for her comment about being able to see Russia from Alaska, with quotes from SNL like “ I can see Russia from my house”. Palin may not have had time to explain in depth, but I’m sure Alaskan residence knew what Palin meant about being able to see Russia.

I was stationed in Elmendorf AFB, Alaska in 1982 to 1985. Knowing how close we were to Russia during the Cold War made you think deeply about our foreign policy with Russia and other nations, and what our response of an invasion or missile attack might be. In between the Asian and American continent is an island and about 50 miles of the Bering Sea. There is an imaginary line separating the two air spaces, in the center of which there is a buffer zone, or no fly zone.

The Soviets routinely violated the no fly zone with their Badger bombers as if testing our response time, or looking for holes in our radar capability. The earth’s magnetic field, which creates the aurora borealis may also bend our radar in ways that create gaps in our ability to detect aircraft. The Russians are checking our fighter’s intercept responses. Who knows how many times Russian Bombers may have flown into the no fly zone, or even into US airspace and not been detected, and just turned around and flown home unnoticed?

Our slogan for Elmendorf AFB, which is the Strategic Air Commend HQ for Alaska, was “ Top Cover for America ”, because we were the first defense for the US against a first strike with nuclear weapons by the Soviets.

Since the Cold War our relations haven’t really changed. Just finances giving them the ability to spread their influence. But, with oil, and organized crime, Russian finances are rebounding along with their old agenda. Look at their influence with Venezuela and Iran. Look at what they just did to Georgia. We tried to bring democracy to Russia with capitalization, but they still don’t want to play nice with the free world. China is taking advantage of us playing capitalist, but they are still Communists to the core. They have friends like Pelosi, Biden, Obama, and Harry Reed leaning towards socialism in Washington, who are slowly taking control of the people. Do people on welfare have power? Do people living on social security have power? Do people living on food stamps have power? Do people who are being taught in our public liberal schools grow up to have power? Do union workers being told who to support have power? The answer is No!

The people at the higher levels of each of these Bureaucratically run government committees, programs, or organizations gain the power and control over your lives, to keep you in a place that they can control you from in order to selfishly, and greedily stay in power. The Communists nations do the same thing over their people, but more aggressively. The Communists have no value for human lives. Who introduced devaluation of human life to the USA? Democrats, through abortion rights laws. Who does this law serve? Ultimately, the legislator with the power of the pen. The emphasis is in the word “power”.

What’s holding the Socialists up from taking complete control of our society are good people, whom have the sense to know right and wrong and what is truth and a lie when they hear it. It’s those who have a moral compass that I believe is given by our creator, God, who are resisting the evils in this world, standing up for what is right, and standing against what is wrong. Does evil exist? We see goodness resist it every day.

Obama and the Dems agenda’s are wrong. If you look over history at what programs the Dems authored into legislation, it would be difficult to find something that didn’t end up being worse for the nation. There maybe rare exceptions of a good result, but probably due to Divine intervention.

The link below is a recent report of a Russian Bomber incident. By continuously creating incidences, the Russians have succeeded in making us drop our mental guard in that the article quotes “Meanwhile, U.S. military officials say the incidents are not a concern. They say it’s the Russian military flexing its ability and presence”. After decades of these incursions, we stopped becoming concerned, because it’s so routine. So, if an attack does happen, we won’t be on our guard mentally, pants down around our ankles.

The key word here is Russian bomber “presence”. Makes you think a little more about what Palin was saying when she stated that you can see Russia from Alaska. Unfortunately, the elite Dems making fun just don’t get it!

Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack by Japan, and 911 was a surprise attack. We were complacent and not looking for an attack, because we thought that we were untouchable. They wouldn’t dare!

Strategically, taking out our Alaskan oil fields would be one of th

Your right, what people forget is how close they are to each other, 55 miles separates the mainlands. Guess what, that's closer than what I drive to and from each work each day!!!!! And if you take the islands, a mere 2.5 miles! That's less than my house to the local freeway!

Of course not many people understand that Russia is the third closet country to the USA (behind Canada and Mexico). They think of Russia as some country in Europe half a continent away. Perhaps if the liberals had actually studied geography instead of flowers they might understand some things.
