Happy fiftieth Sputnik! - Spaceuropeans
On October 4, 1957, a metal sphere at least two feet became the first artificial satellite of the planet Earth. You can see a model of this area, called Sputnik 1, in the picture below (photo NASA).

It was a great success for the Soviet Union and a blow for the United States. They hastily tried to retaliate by launching its Vanguard satellite, which, however, weighed less than two kilograms while Sputnik was over eighty.Anyway, the TV show that followed the failure did not help, also because at that time the Soviets had launched Sputnik 2, weighing about 500 kilograms and sending poor dog Laika to a sad death in space.
The rest is history. The Americans responded and founded NASA, and actually surpassed the Soviets during the next decade and win the race to the moon. Can other countries joined space exploration, particularly in Europe, China, India and Japan.
And it all started with Sputnik 1 small ... including this blog, the last by-product.
